This case arose in early 2017 when the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) initiated a citywide demolition drive to clear alleged encroachments from public land and stormwater drains (rajakaluves). As part of this initiative, several residential and commercial properties were marked for demolition, including those owned or occupied by the petitioners, among them Aditya Sanghi himself.
The petitioners contended that their properties were being targeted without proper verification, acquisition, or notice, and that the demolitions were being carried out arbitrarily. They filed a writ petition before the High Court of Karnataka, challenging the legality of BBMP’s actions and asserting violations of their constitutional and statutory rights.
